The display technology has evolved from the cathode ray tube (CRT) through the liquid colour display (LCD) and light emitting diode (LED) to the SED. This evolution of the display technology has been the result of continued research efforts of the top companies like Sony, Samsung and many others. This has been used in the making of display panels of the TVs, the LED lighting panels of the consumer electronic products and the also of the computer monitors. Besides, the display technology, there has also been considerable improvement in the functions and audio-visual quality of the LCD TV. This has been made possible by the development of the transmission methods which allow for the transfer of the high resolution images, videos, sounds and other data forms without any problem over the internet.
There have been high definition (also, high resolution) TVs (called HD TVs, in short). There is also the HD DVD which is capable of storing and in output delivery of high resolution data in the text, video, photo and music files. The HD DVDs are not available any more since the blu-ray disk manufacturers have been contending the HD DVD player technology to be their own. The HD DVD and other devices are connected with the HD TVs with the use of special cables which are called the high definition multi-media interface (HDMI) cables. These cables are the special because these are capable of taking through high definition data from the input to the display devices. The biggest benefit of using these HDMI cables is that one wire can be used to attach the different devices and this reduces the clutter created due to too many wires being present. The standardization of different high definition systems helps in achieving the compatibility with each other and producing the best quality audio-visuals.
The LED lighting in the display devices makes use of the light emitting diodes for the back lighting purposes. You can find these being used for back lighting of the telephone instruments besides the display devices. This has made TVs more practical and reduced their thickness. These are now flat panel TVs which are easy to pack and carry. In some respects, the old CRT based TV is still considered better than the modern LCD TV. The CRT ones score over the LCD ones in terms of the better contrast ratios and good quality viewing from the side angles. However, despite there advantages, it is the LCD TV or the LED TV which is outselling the CRT TVs.
A new technology of the surface electron emission display (SED) promises to combine the benefits of both the CRT and the LED TVs. Besides these, there are plasma TVs which are considered to be better than the LCD TV and LED ones except for their negative feature of the retention of the last picture for a long time when these are turned off. These have far longer life than other new generation display devices.
